Downtown San Antonio is filled with fun activities for families and friends year-round, but during the month of November and December it is especially exciting with colorful Christmas lights hanging from the trees and buildings downtown.

Starting from November 12th, 2021, the River Walk lights up with boat parades, caroling, and other festivities that are fun for the whole family. The lighting of the River Walk is a tradition that has been happening in San Antonio for many years.

The official ceremony will be held on November 26, 2021 at the Arneson River Theater, free of charge, for local citizens to come and enjoy the show. The lighting includes about 2,000 string lights that cover trees and buildings throughout downtown. Downtown usually begins to light up the decorations at around 6pm, all the way into the early mornings at 7am.

The lighting this year will take place a bit earlier than the past years to reduce large crowds with the pandemic still in motion. Nevertheless, it is a fun activity to get out of the house and maintain social distance while looking at all the beautiful displays San Antonio has to offer. A fun activity that will surely help the whole family get into the holiday spirit!

The fun doesn’t stop at the lighting, following the Christmas show, the annual Ford
Holiday River Parade will take place shortly after the ceremony. The River Parade is the perfect opportunity for the community to show off local business and their festive boat decorations. The parade will include company’s, sport teams, and live Christmas carols throughout the night for everyone to enjoy. You might even have the chance to see the San Antonio Spurs Coyote and the Silver Dancers on a boat, as they make an appearance every year!

Both the Downtown Christmas Lighting and the River Parade is a great way to have
quality family time as you enjoy the stunning string lights covering the river. If you don’t have the chance to see the lighting ceremony, the lights will be displayed until early January of next year, or you can catch the lighting being aired on the local news station. There is truly no excuse to skip out on this opportunity of fun. Whether you go with a family member or friend, the lighting will surely leave you in awe with memories of a lifetime.

So, if you are looking for a fun activity to do over Thanksgiving break or Christmas break, be sure to have the River Parade on the top of your list!
