The March 2017 issue of The Pulse is the seventy-fifth issue published since the Fall of 1998. We asked former reporters and editors to let us know where they are now, their favorite Palo Alto memories, and what advice they would give to current students.
Eve Sanchez was recognized as one of Palo Alto College’s 30 most outstanding students during its 30th anniversary celebration in 2016. After PAC, Sanchez graduated with her bachelor’s in Communication Studies/Journalism from the University of Northern Iowa. The benefits Sanchez received as a reporter led her to work as a communications specialist for the San Antonio AIDS Foundation.
“Working as a staff writer for The Pulse was one of the best things I did while at PAC,” wrote Sanchez. “It was my first taste of journalistic writing and was great training for the kind of work I’ve ended up doing. Having to stay on top of current events, brainstorm story ideas, and constantly write and edit are the types of things I’ve had to do in my professional life. Being a staff writer for The Pulse helped me form those sort of habits that still benefit me, personally and professionally, to this day. My work with The Pulse was also great to have on my resume in college, and I like to think that experience is part of what helped me get an internship in my university’s PR office. In so many ways, writing for The Pulse was a great first step to even bigger things.”
My biggest advice to students would be to not doubt yourself. You have so much potential in you, even if you don’t realize it. You might not be the smartest person in the classroom, but we all start somewhere and, I mean, you are going to school TO LEARN. The whole point is to try new things and struggle and make mistakes. It’s not always fun or pretty–I know I look back on some of my old college essays and cringe–but if you learn from it, it’s totally worth it. You just have to believe in yourself and do the work, and you’ll get to where you want to be.
